Business Development Executive

Commercial and Industrial Solar and Battery Storage

Johannesburg | Port Elizabeth | Cape Town - R60,000 to R80,000 a month basic, plus uncapped commission

Our client designs, engineers and supplies lithium battery energy storage systems, from small systems through to high voltage systems for factories, farms and large sites. They have their own research and development team, their own battery management systems and their own monitoring software, and they are owned by a large South African industrial group. They sell the whole project, not a box: one company from the first conversation to installation and handover.

Three of these roles are open, one in each city. The job is the same in each one. You find, build and close commercial and industrial business in your region.

Read this part before you apply

This is a new business role. Around 99 percent of your pipeline you will create yourself. There is no inbound list and no inherited account book.

You will be in front of customers every day. It cannot be done from a desk or from home.

Deals run from R200,000 to R10 million on systems from 160 kilowatt hours to 5 megawatt hours. If you have not sold at that value, this is not your role.

Commission is paid quarterly on the margin you realise, once the money is banked and the project is delivered.

You need your own vehicle and a valid driver licence. Business travel is covered by a company fuel card.

What you will do

- Find your own customers. Farmers, factory owners, producers, property owners and site managers, in person and in their own operations.

- Sell direct to the end customer and through installers and contractors, and reach past the contractor to the end customer.

- Build new installer and contractor relationships and turn them into repeat business.

- Work with the pre-sales and engineering team to read the data, size the system and build the proposal.

- Quote off the price list, hold the margin, and take anything outside the price range to the Head of Sales.

- Carry a monthly sales target of R3 million to R5 million, set with you and measured every quarter.

- Stay with the customer through installation and handover, with the project and after-sales teams behind you.

What you must have

- At least five years selling commercial and industrial solar, battery storage, generators or comparable capital equipment into factories, farms, mines, packhouses, warehouses or property groups.

- Your own closed deals, with the numbers. You must be able to give the customer type, the value, the system size and the time from first meeting to order.

- A record of generating your own leads and closing your own deals.

- A stable employment record. Several short stays will not get through screening.

- Enough technical understanding to read a basic load profile and explain payback to a customer. The technical team handles the detail.

- Own vehicle and a valid driver licence.

- The energy for a high performance environment. You will be supported, but you will not be carried.

Do not apply if

x Your selling experience is retail, residential solar, insurance, telecoms or another consumer product.

x You have only worked an inbound enquiry list or an inherited account base.

x You want an office based or mostly remote role.

x You have had three or more employers in the last three years.

x You cannot put numbers to the deals you have closed.

What is on offer

- R60,000 to R80,000 a month basic, depending on the track record and network you bring. Total cost to company.

- Uncapped commission on realised margin, paid quarterly. The scale runs from 1 percent of margin at 60 percent of target up to 5 percent at target and above, with nothing capped above that.

- A build-up period while your pipeline fills, so you are not held to a full target in your first month.

- Company fuel card for business travel, a cell phone allowance, and all business expenses covered.

- Pre-sales, engineering, project and after-sales teams behind every deal, and a branch showroom to bring customers into.

- A region of your own, and a business that is growing and backs people who want to move up.

How to apply

Send your curriculum vitae together with the following. Applications without this detail will not be considered.

- Which city you are applying for.

- Your last three closed deals: customer type, rand value, system size, and how long each took from first meeting to order.

- What percentage of your current pipeline you generated yourself.

- Your current basic salary and your commission earnings for the past twelve months, separately.

QUALITY ADMINISTRATOR

Six month contract · Upington, Northern Cape · Site based

Role Overview

We are recruiting for a large solar project in the Northern Cape, on behalf of the owner. The project has been running for three and a half years and finishes at the end of this year. The building work is almost done. What is left is the paperwork that proves it was built properly, and that is what this role is here to finish.

You will not be doing the building. The contractor does that. You sit on the owner side of the fence and make sure what the contractor hands in is complete, correct and on time. Every data pack has to be over the line before the project closes.

This is not a quality manager role and it does not need a quality qualification. It is a heavy administration role for someone who lives in spreadsheets and documents, and who can open a file and see straight away when something is not sitting right.

You report to the Quality Manager as your department head, and day to day you work directly with the Construction Manager and the Project Manager.

What You Will Do

Take the administration side of the quality function off the site team so they can stay on site

Chase the contractor for the documents they have committed to hand over, and keep chasing until they arrive

Check every data pack that comes in. Is it complete, does it match the specification, is anything missing or in the wrong order

Build and run the trackers that show where every pack sits and what is still outstanding

Work in Excel every day. Read formulas, protect them, fix formatting, sort and filter, and improve a workbook that is not doing its job

Load the finished packs and keep the filing in order so any record can be found in seconds

Report status each week so the project team knows exactly what is outstanding and who is holding it up

What Good Looks Like

You can open a file you have never seen before and work out how it has been put together without anyone explaining it. You look at a spreadsheet and see immediately where the formulas are, what someone has typed over and what is broken. You notice when a number does not agree with the one three pages earlier, even when you do not know the process behind it.

The contractor knows you are on top of it. You cannot go in and do their work for them, so you hold them to the programme, you follow the process that has been set up, and you keep asking until the document is in. You stay professional about it and you never let it slide.

At the end, every pack is complete, loaded and signed off, and nobody is hunting for a missing record.

What We Are Looking For

Minimum requirements

- Matric

- Five to ten years in a serious administration role where documents, records and data were the actual job

- Strong Excel. Formulas, formatting, sorting, filtering, and building a workbook that someone else can use

- Strong Word

- A sharp eye. You can look at a document and tell that something is wrong before you know why

- Able to hold people to a deadline when those people do not report to you

- Able to be based in Upington for the full six months

Preferred

Construction or renewable energy experience. It helps, but it is not what we are looking for first

Document control or handover pack experience

We are not looking for a quality background or a construction background. We are looking for an administrator who is very good, very organised and very quick on a spreadsheet.

What We Offer

Six month contract through to the end of the project

Accommodation provided in Upington

A clear job with a real finish line and a team that knows exactly what it needs from you

Strong performance here puts you first in line for a longer project afterwards. That is a real outcome, not a maybe.

Contracts Manager

Role Overview

We are recruiting on behalf of an established South African independent power producer that develops, finances, builds, owns and operates renewable energy projects across solar, wind, hydro, hybrid and battery storage technologies. The business carries its projects from preferred bidder stage through financial close and construction into long-term operation, which places the contracts function at the centre of how project value is protected across the full asset lifecycle.

This is an in-house Contracts Manager role within the Legal Affairs function, supporting the Legal Counsel: Construction and Operations, and working alongside project managers during construction and facility managers during operations. You sit on the Employer and Owner side, not the contractor side. The purpose of the role is to make sure the company’s own contractual obligations are discharged, and that its rights are enforced against counterparties including EPC contractors, O&M contractors, offtakers, the grid access unit and government.

Location: Western Cape. Fixed-term contract.

What You Will Do

• Support the Legal Counsel from preferred bidder phase onwards through contract review and finalisation with contractors and other counterparties, including the drafting and negotiation of EPC contracts, O&M contracts and co-operation agreements, to facilitate financial close.
• Enforce the owner’s rights under the project agreements and project documents, including the Power Purchase Agreement, Implementation Agreement, Self-Build Agreement, Distribution Customer Use of System Agreement and the financing documents.
• Establish standard forms of contractual notices and communications so that rights are exercised consistently and on time across the portfolio.
• Review and challenge representations made by project and facility managers in the execution of their duties.
• Assist and guide the asset management team with the set-up and creation of the project obligations tracker, and with the establishment and maintenance of contractual record-keeping.
• Challenge and defend claims, change proposals and variations under the respective contracts, and draft the claims and contractual communications required in terms of the project documents.
• Escalate contractual matters immediately where the risk warrants it, keep the Legal Counsel updated on emerging and ongoing contractual risk, and advise on mitigation options and strategies.
• Provide assistance and advice across the full contractual cycle: owner and contractor claims, adjudications and determinations, pass-through claim communications and equivalent project relief, correspondence with counterparties, lenders and shareholders, review of contractor documentation, rejection notices, programme reviews, suspension notices, milestone reviews and payment applications, unit and facility completion notices, taking-over and final acceptance, notification of defects, variations, and contract termination.

What We’re Looking For

Minimum requirements

• LLB, BA (Law) or BCom (Law) preferred, with articles completed.
• At least 5 years’ post-qualification experience.
• At least 3 years’ experience in the drafting and negotiation of EPC and O&M contracts.
• At least 3 years’ experience in the administration of EPC contracts.
• At least 3 years’ experience in the administration of O&M contracts.
• At least 3 years’ experience in the administration of contracts on REIPPPP projects.
• Excellent written communication skills.

Preferred

• Familiarity with conciliation, mediation and arbitration processes.
• Presentation skills.

What We Offer

• An in-house role on the Employer and Owner side of renewable energy projects, not the contractor side.
• Exposure across the full project lifecycle, from preferred bidder and financial close through EPC construction and into long-term operations.
• Work across multiple technologies: solar, wind, hydro, hybrid and battery storage.
• Direct interface with the Legal Counsel, project and facility managers, lenders, shareholders and counterparties.
• Western Cape based.
• Market related package.
