Role Overview
The Construction Health & Safety Officer (CHSO) is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and enforcing all health and safety requirements on a major road infrastructure construction project. This is a high-impact, compliance-critical role and forms part of the tender-scored professional team. The CHSO ensures full adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Construction Regulations, and client requirements, while supporting site management in maintaining a safe working environment across the project corridor.

Where is this project? N2 Section 18 Upgrade — Viedgesville (KM 65.6) to Mthatha (KM 85.0) OR Tambo District Municipality · Eastern Cape, South Africa
Contract Duration 53 months including 5 months mobilisation. All roles are project-based and require full-time on-site commitment for the contract duration.
What You Will Do
- Develop, implement, and maintain the site-specific Health and Safety Plan in line with statutory and client requirements.
- Conduct regular health and safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the construction site.
- Manage incident reporting, investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective and preventative action close-out.
- Deliver health and safety inductions and ongoing training to all site personnel and subcontractors.
- Ensure statutory reporting and compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
- Liaise with SANRAL, the Department of Employment and Labour, and other regulatory authorities as required.
- Maintain accurate health and safety records, registers, reports, and documentation required by legislation and the client.
What We’re Looking For
Minimum Requirements
- Active professional registration with SACPCMP as a Construction Health & Safety Officer (CHSO) — mandatory.
- Minimum qualification: Health and Safety Programme or Certification at NQF Levels 3–5.
- Preferred qualification: National Diploma in Health and Safety (NQF 6) or higher.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ health and safety management experience on construction projects.
- Proven experience on road construction or civil infrastructure projects.
- Experience on projects with a construction value of R200 million or more (inclusive of VAT) is strongly preferred.
- Sound working knowledge of OHSA, Construction Regulations, and relevant SANS standards.

- Proof of active SACPCMP registration as a Construction Health & Safety Officer.
- Certified copy of highest academic qualification (minimum NQF 3–5 health and safety programme).
- Project experience record for at least two (2) projects within the last 15 years, including client details, contract value, scope, dates, and role performed.
- Proof of participation or completion documentation for each project submitted (Practical Completion Certificate, Letter of Award, or client reference letter).
