Role Overview
This role is responsible for managing all environmental compliance, monitoring, and reporting obligations on a major linear infrastructure construction project. The Designated Environmental Officer (DEO) ensures that all activities are undertaken in strict accordance with the approved Environmental Authorisation (EA) and Environmental Management Programme (EMPr), and serves as the primary environmental interface between the contractor, the client, and regulatory authorities. The role carries full on-site accountability for environmental performance across the construction corridor and requires strong regulatory knowledge, field presence, and stakeholder engagement capability.

Contract Duration 53 months including 5 months mobilisation. All roles are project-based and require full-time on-site commitment for the contract duration.
What You Will Do
- Implement, monitor, and enforce the approved Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) across all construction activities.
- Conduct routine environmental inspections and formal audits along the construction corridor, identifying non-conformances and driving corrective action.
- Deliver environmental inductions and ongoing awareness training for site personnel and subcontractors.
- Identify, manage, and protect environmentally sensitive areas including watercourses, wetlands, heritage features, and protected vegetation.
- Manage environmental incident reporting, investigations, and close-out of corrective and preventative actions.
- Compile and submit monthly environmental compliance reports to the client and relevant authorities.
- Liaise continuously with the client’s Environmental Manager, regulatory bodies, and local environmental authorities on compliance matters.
- Monitor rehabilitation activities and post-construction environmental performance.
What We’re Looking For
Minimum Requirements
- National Diploma in Environmental Management, Environmental and Health Management, Natural Sciences, or a related field (NQF 6 or higher).
- Minimum of 5 years’ proven experience as an Environmental Officer or Designated Environmental Officer on construction projects.
- Demonstrated experience implementing and auditing against an approved EMPr on linear infrastructure projects (roads, pipelines, powerlines).
- Sound working knowledge of South African environmental legislation, including NEMA, NWA, and NEMBA.
Preferred
- Experience on large-scale construction projects with contract values of R200 million or more.
- Strong reporting, audit, and regulatory liaison capability.
- Proven ability to operate independently on site with authority and professionalism.
